  11. LESSON 5               PROPER NOUNS - SHORT FORMS

  13. A proper noun may have a shortened form used as a COMPLETE SUBSTITUTE for 
  14. the proper noun.  These forms are used for brevity and are capitalized in 
  15. the same pattern as the proper noun they represent: 
  16.  
  17.   1. ABBREVIATIONS use some of the letters of the proper noun ->
  18.  
  19.            Mon., Mass., Robt., W. Va., WV (zip code)
  20.  
  21.   2. INITIALS, appropriately, use only the "initial" letters of the words
  22.      of the proper noun they represent ->   IBM, IRS, AMA, M.B.A., R.N. 
  23.  
  24.   3. "The" in short forms.  Capitalize the article "The" only when it
  25.       is part of the proper noun in its full form -> 
  26.  
  27.       The Times (The Japan Times),   The Journal (The Wall Street Journal)
  28.  
  29.   4. Nicknames or well-known substitutes (also used for color, may not be
  30.      any shorter than full form!) ->
  31.  
  32.          Stonewall Jackson, the Channel, the Fed, the Hub
  33.          The Babe, The Sultan of Swat, George Herman "Babe" Ruth

  35. Can you identify these states by their nicknames:
  36.          Pine Tree State  Sunshine State  Golden State  Evergreen State
  37. Hint: The Post Office would identify them as ME, FL, CA, WA.

  39. If you walked directly south from North Dakota, what states would you walk 
  40. through before getting to Mexico?
  41. To help, memorize the sentence easily remembered by angry tax payers:
  42. "NORTH or SOUTH, NOBody CAN OK TaXes."  Can you make the association?

  45. Using the article "the" leads to awkward constructions 
  46. without a special exception.
  47.    Notice: "I read the "The New York Times."
  48. Although grammatically correct, eliminate the first "the"
  49. because the second "The" is part of the actual name.

  51. Sometimes the meaning of a nickname depends on the reader.  
  52. If you said "the Canal" to a resident of Egypt and a 
  53. resident of Panama they would think of different canals.
